QUESTION
What’s the difference between File Protection Desktop and File Protection Server?
ANSWER File Protection Desktop is for personal computers, File Protection Server is for file servers.
File Protection Desktop is the application installed on a computer that is responsible for securely transmitting data between the device on which the application is installed and the service. It runs silently in the background, ensuring that your data is securely backed up whenever a file is added or changed.
File Protection Server is designed specifically to run on server operating systems to back up the files stored on local, attached, or network drives. File Protection Server always runs in service mode, which ensures that it's constantly backing data up, even on unattended devices.
Here are some key differences between Desktop and Server:
Feature | Desktop | Server |
---|---|---|
Backup locations permitted | Internal drives only | Internal drives, external drives and network drives |
Supported OSs | Windows, macOS | Windows Server, Windows, macOS |
Maximum bandwidth | 5MB/s | 10MB/s |
Service Mode | Can be enabled* | Always runs in service mode |
Usage | Single User Profile | File Servers |
* While service mode can be enabled and may be a suitable temporary option (for instance, when performing the initial backup), we do not offer technical support for File Protection Desktop when running in service mode. |
